Date: September 4th, 2005

Brenda Shoss, from Kinship Circle, has sent out an extensive media list and is urging activists to contact the media and report on the issue of stranded animals in Louisiana. That issue is a human tragedy as well as an animal tragedy, as the greatest loss many people will suffer is that of their beloved companions. I will paste her superb compilation below. She recommends that people send her letter, as is, with a brief introduction, or to compose their own notes entirely. It is my understanding that short heartfelt notes are the most likely to be read.

The alert below includes both email addresses and fax numbers for the major news shows. It also includes contact information for various animal disaster relief resources on the scene, which you may wish to forward to people in need or to the media.

Also, I wish to draw attention to a letter from Dana Nesbitt, President, Humane Society of Louisiana, towards the end of this alert. It gives us a good update on the situation.

Here is the Kinship Circle alert:
------------------------------------------------

9/4/05--KATRINA: 3) Join Our Media Blitz For Animals
KINSHIP CIRCLE
http://www.kinshipcircle.org

This is the third in a series of Kinship Circle Katrina Animal Relief
alerts. Unlike our first two glossaries of news, hands-on help, resources
for donating money, supplies, etc.

THIS ALERT TARGETS THE NATIONAL BROADCAST MEDIA.

For the last 48 hours Kinship Circle has barraged anchors, correspondents,
producers, programmers... at CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX. We've faxed. We've
emailed. We've called. Our message: Air animal disaster relief resources.
Now.

WE NEED YOU TO FINISH WHAT WE STARTED!

Below, you will find the message Kinship Circle, with Merritt Clifton,
Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE, sent to over 200 television news contacts. The media
now needs to be flooded with hundreds to thousands of comments asking them
to report on the animals.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU SEND KINSHIP CIRCLE'S MESSAGE, DO NOT CHANGE ANY WORDING.
If our information becomes too lengthy, it could hurt our plea for media
exposure.

We do encourage you to write either a very short introductory note or your
own letter all together. Tell major news networks you want information
publicized on Katrina's animal victims.

Sign your name, address and phone number to verify your identity.

FYI: Tonight during Larry King's three hour special, How You Can Help, he
mentioned disaster relief resources for animals TWICE. We'd like to think
that is because we compulsively faxed and emailed Mr. King throughout the
day!

Whatever prompted Larry King and CNN to finally utter these words: "Help for
the animals. It's very important..." we don't care. Let's hope it's a trend.

Please email and fax obsessively. The animals are counting on you.

We urge you to write a short note
BEFORE Kinship's message or your

Please Help Katrina's Forgotten Victims

Dear News Broadcaster:

Lynn Szymurski and her husband are finally safe. They escaped the wind,
water and looting that transformed their home city of New Orleans. But, they
are distraught over a development the media has largely ignored: Katrina's
animal victims.

According to a communication between Lynn and her husband, New Orleans
authorities may soon be directed to shoot to kill the multitude of former
pets and strays wandering the streets starving, ill or injured
(documentation from Lynn Szymurski after resource list). These are domestic
cats and dogs. To many, they were family members.

But with federal authorities scrambling to save human lives, the animals are
forgotten victims. On September 2, 2005 the Associated Press reported: "The
Superdome, where some 25,000 people were being evacuated by bus to the
Houston Astrodome, descended into chaos as well... Many people had dogs and
they cannot take them on the bus.

"A police officer took one from a little boy, who cried until he vomited.
'Snowball, Snowball,' he cried. The policeman told a reporter he didn't know
what would happen to the dog."

Why do I know where that police officer could have taken Snowball, along
with other evacuees' pets, but local and federal authorities do not? I hold
the media accountable for doing little to publicize the well-organized
animal disaster relief effort.

Right now, approximately 50 teams of trained animal rescue volunteers have
converged upon New Orleans, Gulfport and other flood-damaged areas. The
ASPCA, Humane Society of the U.S., American Humane Association, Best Friends
Society, Noah's Wish, Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS), and Alley Cat
Allies are among many national organizations coordinating efforts with the
Louisiana SPCA, Humane Society of Louisiana, the Louisiana Veterinary
Association (LVMA), and other local organizations in stricken areas.

Your coverage of the human carnage, despair, rage and suffering is
breathtaking. But certainly there is room for How To Help, or even a news
scroll, about the many drop sites for displaced animals. The human rescuers
and animals trapped in makeshift shelters--most without electricity, food,
water or communication--need financial donations and supplies as well.

I implore you to help these poor animals. A concise list of Animal Disaster
Relief Resources follows this note. Time is running out. Please air this
information now. Americans have enough compassion and empathy for ALL of
Katrina's casualties.

Sincerely,
Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle

From: Lynn Szymurski, richlynn@COX.NET
Urgent news from New Orleans

I will write a more detailed post tomorrow, actually today, but my husband
finally reached me. He is safe, well protected by our Police force when
they are fighting the fires, but I need to get this out ASAP! What he told
me is so disturbing and urgent, if there is anyone out there with the power
to do something quickly, this has to get out.

I do have more inside info, but I'm too drained to write more. My husband
said that a shoot to kill order with regards to animals may begin soon. They
believe it is the most humane way to handle the multitude of animals that
are starving and ill, or injured. I cannot fathom this, and I can't bear to
think that someone's family pet will end like this.

Please, please, please try to get this order rescinded. I don't know who it
came from. But someone will know the right person to contact. Let them
begin on the Westbank, it isn't flooded, and there are secure back highways
to come in. The rescues are just waiting for the word to go, and the
military is coming in, and they will take care of the criminals that have
better weapons than our own police force. I will post more, later after
I've rested.

I stand behind the validity of this information.

Siberianly,
Lynn Szymurski

FROM: Dana Nesbitt, President, Humane Society of Louisiana

While we escaped the catastrophic conditions in New Orleans, the
approximately 500 animals now in joint custody of the two groups are now in
a living situation, where there is no electricity, phone service or adequate
supplies. We are now finally able to access water from a well. Generators,
pet food, animal care supplies and clothing/ food for our workers, who have
effectively been made homeless, are needed. We are operating at 115 Obed
Magee Road in Tyler Town, Mississippi, 39667.

Meanwhile, in the nearby city of New Orleans, the crisis continues.
Alongside the devastating, heartbreaking human tragedy, pets and homeless
animals are left to fend for themselves and are suffering and dying on the
streets. We know of many rescuers and animal caretakers, who stayed behind
to care for their animals, and are at great risk.

Maddie Bernard, the founder of "Used Dogs" recently was able to contact us,
and she described the gangs of armed and dangerous criminals moving along
her street, where she is hiding with her animals. Pam Casey, one of the
cofounders of "Spay Mart" stayed behind with her husband to care for
hundreds of cats. The last time we had contact with them, they were hiding
in the dark, protecting themselves from violent gangs and hoping to acquire
a truck, so they could flee.

Dr. Brian Ghere and Dr. Missy Jackson, both veterinarians, armed themselves
and went into the city and successfully rescued the animals trapped at the
Southern Animal Foundation Clinic. Dr. James Riopelle, a past President of
the Coalition of Louisiana Animal Activists, is trapped at the Mercy Boggs
Hospital with 100 companion animals. The need for our immediate help is
overwhelming.

With our own pets, our sanctuary animals secured, we plan to join with other
agencies to assist with rescue efforts of animals in New Orleans. Anyone
wishing to volunteer to help hands-on can reach Johnna Harris on her cell
phone at 504-512-8777.
