DW-CAL: Sacramento Bee, “Reef rescue: Reasons to go vegan for ocean.” 7/15/24
Date: July 15, 2024 |
Californians:
The state’s capital paper, the Sacramento Bee, today has run an op-ed by PETA’s Rebecca Libauskas , on page 18, titled, “Reef rescue: Reasons to go vegan for ocean.”
It could definitely use some appreciative responses, especially from all in Sacramento, but from others in the state too.
The op-ed is available via MSN, and, interestingly, whereas when I read it in the Sacramento Bee I noted it could use letters that discuss what animals go through, the version on MSN includes the following paragraph, which the Sacramento Bee and some other papers have omitted, near the end just before the paragraph on vegan fish products:
“Fish experience pain, form friendships and enjoy playing games. Some fish even have longer attention spans than humans. They are complex animals who use squeaks and squeals to “talk” to each other and various forms of body language to give directions or signal potential dangers. They don’t want to die for anyone’s fish fry. Likewise, animals raised for food on land want to live. Yet they’re forced to suffer in overcrowded, filthy conditions until they’re crammed onto a truck destined for the slaughterhouse. We can help all animals simply by leaving them off our plates.”
It may be that the paper omitted it for space, or that the writer did. Please don’t complain about the omission – studies have shown that papers are far more likely to publish letters that are laudatory than critical. But please send an appreciative letter, and, in your own words, do consider mentioning what animals go through to get to our plates. Or share your own good experiences with vegan eating!
Yours and all animals’,
