Last week I opened my alert with the sad news of Steve Wise's death. Today I share some of his obituaries and must share more sad news of the death of a beloved animal rights celebrity, Flaco the Owl.

Flaco's death is on the front page of the New York Times, which also has an uplifting lead story today, on a junkie turned dog rescuer. Yesterday the paper ran an important piece on the revolting trade in donkey skins.

First, Flaco. The New York Times front-page article, Sunday, February 25, is titled, "New Yorkers Mourn Neighbor They Could All Look Up To."

The article shares an accusation from a statement by the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo: “The vandal who damaged Flaco’s exhibit jeopardized the safety of the bird and is ultimately responsible for his death. We are still hopeful that the N.Y.P.D., which is investigating the vandalism, will ultimately make an arrest.”...Continue Reading
