Canadians: Jessica Scott- Reid has a superb opinion piece in today’s, Tuesday January 30, Globe and Mail, page 11, titled, "To end toxicity testing on animals, federal funds are needed.” It opens: "In 2016, when Canadian scientist Dr. Charu Chandrasekera was attending international meetings on developing alternatives to animal testing, she was often met with shock when she revealed that Canada lacked its own centre for alternative methods. There are several of these centres around... Continue Reading

Today, Sunday January 28, I bring bad news for which we are thankful for good coverage. The Washington Post Business section cover story is a depressing piece on the greenwashing of hamburgers. And the Los Angeles Times has a welcome editorial on the need to protect mountain lions who are being killed at a quick rate. Before I get to those let me thank all of you who sent letters in response to the Korean dog meat ban to the New York Times and elsewhere. Even if you were not personally... Continue Reading

DC folks: You may like to weigh in on this article, which is announced on the front page of today's Washington Post and then printed on A13 under the title, "Parts of Russia return to using kill shelters, frustrating pet activists." I found it to be a wake-up call in that it notes that Russia is in danger of backtracking, while it seems to make clear that the country has been light years ahead of the United States in this field for the past few years, given that here in the US we still put... This week's New York Times Magazine cover story is about a beluga whale who has escaped from captivity. And today's Los Angeles Times covers the Korean dog meat ban with far more thoughtfulness than we have seen from most outlets. --- The New York Times Magazine, which is released every week as a section of the Sunday New York Times, this week has a photo of a beautiful beluga whale on the cover and the caption, "How do you solve a problem like Hvaldimir?" The in-depth story, on page... Continue Reading

I could not name every paper throughout the US, Canada, the UK, Asia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand announcing today that South Korea has banned dog meat. I will share more on that below, as well as a front-page Los Angeles Times story on the mass killing of chickens to prevent the spread of bird flu. Before I get to those, and urge you to send a letter to your local paper, speaking for all animals, let me share Annoula Wylderich's letter, printed today in the Las Vegas Sun, in... Today's alert is dedicated to Karen Davis of United Poultry Concerns, who we lost last year, as I know I could have counted on her to respond to a Wall Street Journal front-page story about chickens. Can we all please step up on her behalf and make sure the paper gets plenty of letters that speak for them as she would have? Today's, January 8 front-page story is titled "Forget the Wolverines. Jim Harbaugh Also Coaches His Chickens." Penned by Laine Higgins, it opens: "For the better part... Continue Reading

At the end of DawnWatch’s first year, which was the first of this millennium, I might have been able to scrape together a top ten list of great animal media stories. This year, having sent out thousands of articles, I wasn’t even able to categorize them into ten groups, so below you have the DawnWatch Top 23 of 2023. Once categorized, how to rank them? I copped out, or went classical, alphabetical. Mostly. As you will see, I made a couple of exceptions. It's been a fabulous... Continue Reading

Pennsylvania DawnWatchers: The story about Ricardo, the runaway steer, originally published by the Washington Post, is reprinted in today's, Thursday December 28, Philadelphia Inquirer on page 19, titled, "Runaway steer finds sanctuary." I can provide this gift link to the article in the Post, which is the same as in today's Inquirer, except for the headline. Will you take this opportunity to lend animals your voice, and dash off just a couple of lines, thanking the paper for... Continue Reading

Floridians: I urge you to please respond to this op-ed , printed on page 12 of today's, December 27, Sun Sentinel, (all editions) titled, "International organization’s monkey business will slow medical research." It is by Matthew Bailey, president of the Foundation for Biomedical Research, and tells readers that because long-tailed macaques are "prevalent" and often considered an "invasive species" it is fine to experiment on them, and that they are "indispensable" to medical...
