The Sunday, March 10, Los Angeles Times has a deeply disturbing front-page story titled "Avian flu is killing sea mammals. Angelenos: Today's Los Angeles Times is full of exciting animal stuff! 1) An article on page B1, by Andrew J. Campa, titled, "A bid to make more rentals pet friendly." It opens: "All dogs may go to heaven, but California landlords aren't as accommodating. "Pet owners can have a tougher time finding apartments because of the surfeit of landlords who don't allow dogs, cats or other animals in their buildings. A new bill, however, seeks to open more apartments to renters with... Continue Reading

A full Sunday New York Times letters column devoted entirely to cell cultivated meat is an important animal media event in itself, which I will share below, along with New York Times columnist Margaret Renkl's take on Flaco. She nails it, like usual. And today's Guardian has a welcome article on a "transfarmation" project, which is turning animal farms into plant farms! I posted Sunday's New York Times letters ...Continue Reading

Last week I opened my alert with the sad news of Steve Wise's death. Today I share some of his obituaries and must share more sad news of the death of a beloved animal rights celebrity, Flaco the Owl. Flaco's death is on the front page of the New York Times, which also has an uplifting lead story today, on a junkie turned dog rescuer. Yesterday the paper ran an important piece on the revolting trade in donkey skins. First, Flaco. The New York Times front-page article, Sunday, February 25,... Continue Reading

Nevada activists: An article from yesterday's South Florida Sun Sentinel (which was announced on the front page) appears today in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, on page 18, under the headline "Esteemed animals advocate dies at 73." In Steve's honor, will you please thank the paper for honoring him, submitting just a couple of lines that speak for animals? You know how much that would please him. Yours and all animals', Karen Dawn of DawnWatch https://D

I open this alert with the devastating news that our movement has lost Steven Wise. His extraordinary books, "Rattling the Cage: Towards Legal Rights for Animals," and "Drawing the Line: Science and the Case for Animal Rights" profoundly affected my own thinking and activism, and he was a friend. If you know nothing of us work, check out the trailer for the wonderful Pennebaker-Hegedus HBO documentary about his work, "Unlocking the Cage." If you have never seen that film you are missing out -... Continue Reading
