In major media this weekend we have a dispiriting New York Times guest essay announcing (prematurely) the death of cell cultivated meat, a happier Wall Street Journal front page story noting that the bacon industry's troubles, and news from Miami where the Seaquarium has lost a key requirement for its lease. --- The New York Times guest essay by Joel Fisher, on page 6 of the Sunday Review section, is titled, "$3 Billion Later, Where's The (Planet-Saving, Lab-Grown) Beef?" It... Continue Reading

Florida folks: Your papers are full of the good news that the Miami Seaquarium has lost a key certification for its lease, and the bad news about what animal there have been going through. Will you please grab this opportunity to send a quick note off to your paper calling for its closure? The article is in today's Sunday, February 11, Miami Herald, titled "Seaquarium loses key certification for Miami-Dade County lease but vows to stay open," on pages 17 and 20. It's in the South... Canadians: A bizarre suggestion, that Taylor Swift might help save the Canada sealing industry, is the subject of an article teased on the front page of the National Post and taking up most of page 3, and on the front page of the Ottawa Citizen, as well appearing in a dozen other Canadian papers which I will list below with headline and page number. Will you please check it out and send a very quick response to the National Post at via this form and to whichever paper below is local to... Continue Reading

Though the subject matter is awful, it is wonderful to see the placement of Mexico City's bullfighting battle as the lead story on the front page of the Sunday, February 4, New York Times. Today's Sunday Globe has the same New York Times story on page 4. And the New York Times also has a particularly strong article today, on the cover of the Metro section, about the famous Central Park Zoo escapee, an owl named Flaco. Meanwhile an op-ed in today's Los Angeles Times covers the reintroduction of... Continue Reading

Floridians: The Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board has today come out, beautifully, against a proposed open season on bears. The page 16 editorial is titled, "Bill is bad news for bears — and for Florida." It opens with: "Florida’s lawmakers should know by now that nothing riles their constituents up more than legislation impacting animal welfare. They’re certainly old enough to remember what happened in October 2015 — the last time the state decided it was OK to... Continue Reading

Canadians: Jessica Scott- Reid has a superb opinion piece in today’s, Tuesday January 30, Globe and Mail, page 11, titled, "To end toxicity testing on animals, federal funds are needed.” It opens: "In 2016, when Canadian scientist Dr. Charu Chandrasekera was attending international meetings on developing alternatives to animal testing, she was often met with shock when she revealed that Canada lacked its own centre for alternative methods. There are several of these centres around... Continue Reading

Today, Sunday January 28, I bring bad news for which we are thankful for good coverage. The Washington Post Business section cover story is a depressing piece on the greenwashing of hamburgers. And the Los Angeles Times has a welcome editorial on the need to protect mountain lions who are being killed at a quick rate. Before I get to those let me thank all of you who sent letters in response to the Korean dog meat ban to the New York Times and elsewhere. Even if you were not personally... Continue Reading

DC folks: You may like to weigh in on this article, which is announced on the front page of today's Washington Post and then printed on A13 under the title, "Parts of Russia return to using kill shelters, frustrating pet activists." I found it to be a wake-up call in that it notes that Russia is in danger of backtracking, while it seems to make clear that the country has been light years ahead of the United States in this field for the past few years, given that here in the US we still put... This week's New York Times Magazine cover story is about a beluga whale who has escaped from captivity. And today's Los Angeles Times covers the Korean dog meat ban with far more thoughtfulness than we have seen from most outlets. --- The New York Times Magazine, which is released every week as a section of the Sunday New York Times, this week has a photo of a beautiful beluga whale on the cover and the caption, "How do you solve a problem like Hvaldimir?" The in-depth story, on page... Continue Reading

I could not name every paper throughout the US, Canada, the UK, Asia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand announcing today that South Korea has banned dog meat. I will share more on that below, as well as a front-page Los Angeles Times story on the mass killing of chickens to prevent the spread of bird flu. Before I get to those, and urge you to send a letter to your local paper, speaking for all animals, let me share Annoula Wylderich's letter, printed today in the Las Vegas Sun, in...
