A distressing development in our relationship with the other species on this planet has made the front page of today's New York Times and Washington Post, with prominent coverage elsewhere: the transplant of a kidney from a genetically engineered pig into a man.

Before I cover that, and some happier stories, let me send thanks to all of you who responded to the Los Angeles Times editorial that condemned the use of rodenticides while I share Bee Simpon's superb letter, which was printed under the headline "Killing Animals that Annoy Us," and shared online under the heading, "It's 2024, and humans are still using rat poison to kill animals?"

Bee didn't hold back much as she noted how "selfish and stupid" we are in our dealings with animals, the perfect segue to today's New York Times front page headline, "Patient Mends After Receiving A Pig's Kidney."...Continue Reading
