In major media animal news this weekend: Canadian front pages feature concerns about the surge in imports of macaques for experimentation, the Dallas Morning News has featured the beautiful Washington Post story on the Beagle Freedom Project's purchase of a previous testing facility, the Santa Fe New Mexican has announced, on its front page, the impending move of ex-research chimps to sanctuary, and the Los Angeles Times has featured an update on the court case against those who killed Cedar the Goat and also a case against Starbucks for its upcharge on nondairy milk.

Before I cover those let me send profound thanks to all who wrote to the Los Angeles Times regarding the front-page story on the bear "invasion" of a small town. Today's Los Angeles Times letters section headline, with an accompanying photo, is "In Mountains, bears are not the problem." There are four letters, one from Lorraine Berry (of Eugene Oregon) who recommends the "requirement that homeowners adapt and modify their own habits, one from Deborah Elliot who notes "our hubris in believing that nature and all the nonhuman beings on the planet exist only for (and at) our pleasure", one from Steven Foster, the least bear tolerant, which recommends scaring the bears away "without causing harm" using bean bag round shots, and restoring the natural relationship of fear between man and bear, and one from Merete Rietveld who reminds us that "humans are more likely to be killed by bee stings or lightning than a bear" and suggests we "don’t forget the real threat to a safe environment: us."...Continue Reading
