Hi Bay Area folks: Today's San Francisco Chronicle has a lovely front-page story tilted, "'Feathered rats'? Pigeons misunderstood, S.F. rescuer says." If you hit a paywall, try opening the story in a different browser. You can see how it looks on the front page here . There's always a good chance that letters will be published in response to a front-page story, so let's make sure those letters give animals a voice. Please send a very quick note of thanks for the story,

Today's, Friday June 21, Los Angeles Times has an op-ed on the connection between cattle transport and avian flu spread, which badly needs responses. Yesterday's New York Times had Beluga Whales on the front page, with that same story in today's Boston Globe. Today's Independent informs us that foie gras will be served to VIPs at the Olympics. Over the last couple of weeks, I have sent alerts to Los Angeles, Texas and Canada, and we have had great luck getting letters published in response. This weekend has brought us much major animal news in need of responses. We are looking at cows, whales, mustangs, beagles and cougars: UK and Canadian media are covering police in the UK who chose to stop a runaway calf by ramming her with their vehicle, hard, twice. The Boston Globe Magazine has a depressing lead story on a local... Continue Reading

Canadians: Today the Globe and Mail, page 5, includes an article titled, "U.S. regulators rule the Makah Tribe is allowed to hunt up to 25 grey whales over next decade." At the very least please send just of a line or two to the editor just expressing appreciation for the piece! The paper takes letters at letters@express-news.net and advises, "Say it 150 words or less. Titles are not counted. We receive far more letters than we have space to publish, so we... Angelenos: Yesterday's front page, and today's opinion section of the Los Angeles Times, both have articles focusing on environmental issues, which, of course, strongly impact animals. The Tuesday, June 4, front-page story, by Melody Petersen, titled, "Killing Joshua trees to save planet?" opens with: "A renewable energy company will soon begin clearing thousands of protected Joshua trees just outside this desert town, including many thought to be a century old, to make way... The papers (and podcasts) are packed with animal stories this weekend! Today's New York Times covers ex-research chimps still waiting for sanctuary and a New York Times story on bird flu is in numerous papers across the country. KFF Health News coverage of the avian flu spared into cows and humans was on the cover of yesterday's Dallas Morning News and in numerous other sources. Canadians: Jessica Scott-Reid has an opinion piece in today's, Saturday 25 May, Toronto Star, titled, "Cultivated Meat is the Future." It opens with: "It's hard to imagine anyone being against the innovative idea of meat production minus the many ethical and environmental dilemmas associated with farming and slaughtering billions of animals. "Enjoying a steak or sushi or chicken wings without the weight of massive greenhouse gas emissions, ocean degradation or factory farming on our... Continue Reading

Canadians: The Hamilton Spectator today, Friday the 24th, has a thoughtfully written lead front-page story titled, "Does 'captivity equate to cruelty'?" The subheading explains, "African Lion Safari fights bill that would end the keeping of elephants in Canada. The 55-year-old Hamilton park has 19 of the 25 elephants kept at Canadian zoos." Here's a photo of that gorgeous front page. The article, by J

Angelenos: Today's, Thursday May 23, Los Angeles Times includes an op-ed by Mark Hawthorne titled, "Why going vegan is a 'manly' thing to do." Mark has shared a PDF of the article on his website, so we all get to read it regardless of subscriptions and paywalls. (I send thanks to Eric Mills for sending that link.) I urge you to respond! The same paper has two other articles of interest to animal advocates: On page B1 we find an
