Yesterday was such an extraordinary day for animals in the media, I was frustrated when my email went down preventing me from sending out an alert, but as serendipity would have it, today is just as packed with stories that need attention, and it sure isn't too late to respond to yesterday's articles, so it seems that things work out. Yesterday we had a stunningly good New York Times front-page story titled, "A Cruel Way to Control Bird Flu? Poultry Giants Cull and Cash In." We also... Continue Reading

Today's New York Times has a beautiful op-ed on birding, by Ed Yong, the author of the exquisite book, "An Immense World." The Los Angeles Times has a front-page story on the value of beavers in blocking wildfires, plus a story on mustang roundups and an op-ed on the need for AI protections to consider what's good for all sentient beings, not just humans. Plus Le Monde has covered an orca death at Marineland in Southern France, the Sunday Observer looks at the cruelty of feathers and exotic... Continue Reading

I want to bring attention to two important New York Times stories, one that is a surprisingly feel-good story on deadly marine plastic, and the other an update on the death of Flaco the Owl. Also, front pages in Canada discuss two more beluga deaths at Marineland, the Guardian looks at the use of drones in activism in order to monitor what goes on behind the scenes, and today's Los Angeles Times has a front-page story on a too-tame coyote, First, let me send thanks to all who wrote to the... Canadians: First, huge thanks to all who wrote about the import of macaques for experimentation. Check out these three fantastic letters in today's Toronto Star! Second: Two more beluga deaths at Marineland have been in every Canadian paper, either yesterday, when the issue was on the front page of the Niagara Falls Review, the Welland Tribune (where it is again on the front page today) and St Catherine's Standard, or today, appearing in the Globe and Mail and every other Canadian paper... In major media animal news this weekend: Canadian front pages feature concerns about the surge in imports of macaques for experimentation, the Dallas Morning News has featured the beautiful Washington Post story on the Beagle Freedom Project's purchase of a previous testing facility, the Santa Fe New Mexican has announced, on its front page, the impending move of ex-research chimps to sanctuary, and the Los Angeles Times has featured an update on the court case against those who killed Cedar... A distressing development in our relationship with the other species on this planet has made the front page of today's New York Times and Washington Post, with prominent coverage elsewhere: the transplant of a kidney from a genetically engineered pig into a man. Before I cover that, and some happier stories, let me send thanks to all of you who responded to the Los Angeles Times editorial that condemned the use of rodenticides while I share Bee Simpon's superb letter, which was printed under... Maryland, The Friday March 22 Baltimore Sun has a strong op-ed today, page 11, by Caroline A. Griffin, the former chair of the Baltimore Mayor's Anti-Animal Abuse Advisory Commission and the co-founder of Show Your Soft Side. It is titled, "Hold juveniles accountable for animal cruelty in state," and opens with: "In the coming days, the General Assembly is poised to pass a sweeping Juvenile Law Reform bill that would, among other things, restore jurisdiction to courts over juveniles ages... Angelenos: A front page story in the Wednesday May 20 Los Angeles Times, written in very dramatic over-the-top anti bear language, could badly use some animal friendly letters. It is written by Louis Sahagun, titled "A mountain village finds itself in hungry bears' crosshairs" and opens with: "PINE MOUNTAIN CLUB, Calif. — Led by a sense of smell 100 times keener than that of humans, the predators have crashed through windows, ripped tiles off roofs and torn solid wood doors off their... There's so much good news in papers this weekend! The Wall Street Journal celebrates the return of Ringling Bros without animals. UK papers announce the arrival of cell cultivated meat made specifically for cats! And the Los Angeles Times has come out, again, strongly against rodenticide. "The Circus Is Back—and the Stars Are No Longer Animals," is the page B5 headline in the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal, Saturday March 16, with the story taking up most of that page. The... Continue Reading

Angelenos: Today's Los Angeles Times has a super fun front-page story by the wonderful Susanne Rust, titled, "Do vegetarians smell different from meat-eaters?" Hint - the answer is yes. And there is a superb op-ed, page A9, by Melonie San Pietro, titled, "When a dog bites, it's probably because you weren't paying attention." It warns: "Dogs that want your attention make it known, approaching with a wagging tail, soft eyes and a loose, wiggly b
